Middlesex girls Anna Nicholls and Maia Bouchier got their season off to a flying start. Playing for the County's U15 Girls' Team and both using Gunn & Moore bats, Anna and Maia put on an opening stand of 237 off just 40 overs. Both were not out, Anna scoring 108 of the total, with Maia close behind on 107.
The shots of the day were three powerful back foot square cuts from Maia through point, and a beautiful straight drive from Anna up the hill. A credit to good technique as well as a fine bat.
It is thought Anna Nicholls and Maia Bouchier are likely to have put together a Middlesex County record for any wicket at this level, with their 237 beating Maia's own previous record for the U13 Girls last season. At Sussex's academy ground in 2012, Maia posted a 211 third wicket stand with fellow U13 Millie Pope.
The Middlesex U15 squad is coached by Beth Morgan, herself a Gunn and Moore user throughout her 107 caps for England.
Maia and Anna showed no signs of tiring throughout their innings. After 20 overs Beth asked Anna what would be a good total, and she confidently suggested she would be aiming for about 250. The whole squad seem to be really enjoying their cricket this season, and are very supportive of each other.
They trained throughout the winter with impressive intensity, energy, focus and commitment, and it is great to see this bearing fruit so early in the season.
Anna and Maia gave away very few chances in their formidable total, finding the gaps in the field with ease, and looking for 2s and 3s at every opportunity. Ninety-nine without loss after 20 overs, Anna and Maia increased the tempo even more for the next 20 overs, looking more and more secure on what turned out to be a fine batting wicket. Their running between wickets and shot selection was as impressive as you are likely to see at this level.
Maia Bouchier plays her club cricket with Primrose Hill CC as well as at Rugby School. Anna, captain of the U15s on Saturday, plays for the Finchley Gunns 1st XI and is already a member of the Middlesex Senior Squad, having made her debut last season at the age of 14.
Peter Wright, Gunn & Moore MD commented: “This is a magnificent performance by Anna and Maia and we are proud that two such fine young cricketers have chosen to play with Gunn & Moore. They could not be in better hands with Beth and we look forward to hearing further news of their progress.”
