GM rising star, Joe Burns, has capped off a stellar season in first-class cricket by helping Queensland win the Sheffield Shield Final over Tasmania at the Gabba’ by three wickets.

The 22 year-old made 28 quick-fire runs in the first innings and took a crucial catch to dismiss the former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting for one. Burns recently scored his third first-class century of the season against South Australia to put Queensland in the Shield final.

After scoring 140 on his first-class debut last February, the Brisbane-born youngster earned his first full state contract ahead of this season, while also studying for an economics degree. After 14 first-class matches, Burns averages a healthy 46.17.

Queensland, who is skippered by fellow Team GM star and Australian limited-overs all-rounder, James Hopes, won the final after being arguably the best Shield team all year. Hopes' - who was named Sheffield Sheild Player of the Year in 2011 - led his young State to perfection and scored a crucial half-century.

This most recent win caps off an amazing season for Burns, with big things expected of him. We all know that he has what it takes to keep his head firmly on the ground.
