Shane Watson was recently unveiled as Australia’s Test and One-day vice-captain, taking over the realms from Michael Clarke, who replaces Ricky Ponting as team captain.

Shane Watson has arguably been Australia’s most consistent player over the last two seasons, constantly at the top of the batting and bowling averages for his country.

Since the 2009 Ashes series - whereby he slotted in as a make-shift opening batsman - Watson has maintained a Test batting average of well over 40 and a Test bowling average of just under 30.

In 2011, thus far, Watson leads the world run-scoring list in the limited-overs format, amassing 890 runs at an average of 68.46. The next best on the list is the England number 3 and GM’s very own Jonathan Trott, with 797 runs.

The broad-shouldered Queenslander has achieved numerous milestones since joining the GM team over three years ago; including playing two of the most impressive innings in contemporary Australian cricket. His first was a stunning 161 not out in the recent ODI series against England in February, followed by a blistering 185 not out against Bangladesh last month.

They remain the two highest ODI scores by an Australian batsman, and helped to further Watson’s flying reputation as one of the sports most important characters.

It wasn’t that long ago that Watson was continually out of the Australian mix through a series of serious injuries and Watson himself conceded that his head is still trying to comprehend the magnitude of his recent cricketing revival.

"It really has been an amazing couple of years, and something I never really thought would be coming my way after my previous part of my career when I really struggled to get on the field," he said.

The prolific run-scorer intends to keep batting with GM well into the future. Everyone at Gunn & Moore sends their congratulations to Shane as he enters a new phase in his international cricketing career.
